Position Objectives
Responsible for inputting, coordinating and managing of Product Development from receipt of the Marketing brief to launch, ensuring that sufficient alternatives and options are offered to the Marketing team in support of implementing the Marketing strategies. Specific Accountabilities
1. Exploring new technologies:

*In discussion with marketing agree products and competitor products that are to be evaluated

2. Project Management:
* Input into marketing concepts.
* Sourcing of ideas/concepts for new developments and presenting these to Marketing.
* Receive briefs from Marketing.  Project planning to ensure compliance with the process.
* Make recommendations on Third Party Manufacturers (TPM) in consultation with the QA and Procurement Managers.
* Collaborate on brief development with Marketing. Project planning to ensure compliance with the Campaign Planning Process.
* Obtaining initial cost discussion of all new products and raw materials from suppliers.  All final negotiations are done by the ASC Procurement team.
* Obtain response and provide team with results and/or recommendations of feasibility for project progressing to the next stage.
* Ensure Feasibility meetings are held and relevant paperwork signed-off.
* Ensuring new products meet the specifications set by the NPD brief, Avroy Shlain quality requirements, general cosmetic safety efficacy, standards, and other commercial aspects, e.g. Inventory requirements.
*Ensuring deadlines are met according to the Project Management programme for each project by effectively monitoring the suppliers/third-party manufacturer feedback.
*Updating the Technical Support on the progress of projects.
* Provide accurate and complete component specifications to suppliers, Third Party Manufacturers and QA.
* SharePoint – Ensure all technical documentation required for SharePoint site is obtained and timeously uploaded from the H drive onto the international SharePoint site.

3. Product development/re-development:
* Ensuring compliance to approved Development Standard Operating Procedures.
* Ensuring that all newly identified raw materials are sourced from Avroy Shlain, QA approved Suppliers/agents.
* Ensuring that the cost, pack size and other logistic criteria of the newly identified raw materials are in line with Avroy Shlain contractual obligations.
* Ensuring relevant product testing, e.g. Stability, compatibility, preservative challenge testing is performed by the Third Party Manufacturer, prior to marketing or as necessary when changing formulations or packaging and that this testing is performed in a timely manner to meet launch dates.
* Outsourcing other testing, e.g. efficacy, SPF, etc. when required, and thereby providing claim validation on new/redeveloped products.
* Ensuring the handover of BOMs to the Third Party Manufacturers are in line with the Campaign Planning Process deadline.
* Monitoring the first production and validation of new products at the Third Party Manufacturers. Checking the specifications set by the Third Party Manufacturers.

4. Regulatory Requirements:
Keeping abreast of new regulations pertaining to cosmetics and packaging.

5. Technical Assistance to QA, Marketing and the 3rd Party Manufacturer:
* Ensuring good co-operation between Technical and their partners in the company. 
* Assisting the 3RD party manufacturers with any technical and problem solving issues.

6. Value/Cost Engineering
* Ensure that the strategic drive for Total Quality is not compromised with potential cost saving initiatives, and consult with Executive Management where suspect.
* Review alternative source of supply for packaging and raw materials to drive cost and value engineering in partnership with the Procurement team.

Education & Experience
·         BSc/ related with Chemistry
·         N/Dip Packaging (highly advantageous)
·         Cosmetic Packaging Technology – 5 years’ experience (print, plastics                 and glass)
·         Formulation development experience 3-4 years

Key Responsibilities:

Reports to:     Skincare Application Domain Manager

Fuel upstream pipeline with formulas / technological platforms meeting the innovation objectives of the domain, in close collaboration with worldwide domain team.
1.     Design and maximise robust formulation platforms that can be cascaded into winning formulas matching the defined performance objectives:
·    Work closely with Market insights and Evaluation teams to define KPAs (and test them along the project);
·    Translate those into technical leads for formulation.

2. Lead “pre-development” projects while guaranteeing that deadlines, environmental engagements and cost requirements are met:
-Develop new formula, optimize/reformulate existing products and support subsequent scale-up in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
-Source and obtain all appropriate raw material samples with the Raw material team.
-Work as a hands-on skincare formulator, with general direction and with minimum supervision: formulate and prepare laboratory batches and assist with scale-up of assigned product formulations.
-Follow procedures accurately.
-Maintain a legible and accurate record of all pertinent data and testing in a laboratory notebook, including a detailed manufacturing procedure. Note any critical observations during laboratory experiments
-Develop product specifications by evaluating physical/chemical properties of raw materials and formulations (viscosity, specific gravity, microscopic examination, pH, etc.)
-Conduct physical stability testing (at controlled temperatures) necessary to evaluate robustness of candidate formulas, as well as any other test / investigation needed.
– Resolve formulation issues and any technical problems including scale up
-Create, review and approve technical documents to support developmental projects (i.e. ingredient statements, manufacturing formula batch cards, formula costs, etc.)

3. Transfer platforms / formulas to Development while sharing expertise and retaining a leader role in project follow-up;
