IFSCC Congress 2012

 27th IFSCC Congress – South Africa 2012

Expectations were high as the Scientific Cosmetic community gathered at the 27thCongress of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC). Years of planning and preparation led to what could only be described as South Africa’s cosmetic event of the decade, held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 15 to 18 October 2012. Beauty in Diversity – A Global Village, was hosted by the South African Society of Cosmetic Chemists (Coschem) and was attended by over 400 delegates.

The first day of the Congress started on a scientific note with a keynote lecture from Prof A Parsons (AP Consulting, South Africa) on some of the bio phytochemistry options available to researchers and formulators from Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa. This was followed by some truly energetic entertainment by African Frenzy – a performance piece that illustrated the melting pot of South Africa’s traditions and how they have been molded throughout history to help create the diverse culture this country is renowned for.

The second day was opened with a keynote lecture by Prof J Lademan (Carité Dermatology, Germany), who introduced us to the fascinating interactions of free radicals in human skin. The day followed with various lectures in the two separate lecture rooms, which were well attended by the delegates.

During tea breaks delegates were encouraged to visit the poster presentations on display in the exhibition hall and use the valuable opportunity to network with their international counterparts. The Congress was also held alongside Cosmetex, an exhibition during which cosmetic suppliers and manufacturers could network and display their new technologies on offer.

That evening the delegates were treated to a unique experience at The Carnivore, a restaurant that lives up to its reputation as everyone was given the opportunity to taste from the everyday to the more exotic animal specimen that South Africa is home to.

On the Wednesday, Prof K Sakamoto (Chiba Institute of Science, Japan) took us through the evolution of amino acids and how we can learn from nature to optimally utilize these building blocks in our industry. This was followed by more informative lectures covering many valuable areas of interest to cosmetic chemists.

Thursday started off with delegates listening to Dr J Leclaire (L’Oreal, France) on how science could better serve the beauty needs of consumers by taking into consideration specific needs, which became apparent through analyzing the many differences associated with various skin and hair types.

The events were wrapped up with a lovely Gala Banquet, during which delegates enjoyed the talents of Sterling EQ and the various awardwinners were announced. The IFSCC Praesidium Members were introduced and Panvipa Krisdaphong welcomed Roy Gardiner as the Incoming IFSCC President, presenting him with the Presidential Gavel.IFSCC Awards CeremonyDr Fujihiro Kanda presented the following IFSCC Awards:
