President & Chair of Lecture Committee

René obtained her B.Sc. Hons degree at the University of Stellenbosch. She started her career in diverse positions from QA to R&D at Distillers Corporation in Stellenbosch, still has products selling into the local and international markets from this tenure. She started her sales career with Degussa, now Evonik, as Technical Sales Representative, in Animal Nutrition. She obtained experience in Product Management and Business Management, at two major chemical suppliers in South Africa. In November 2011, she joined Evonik Africa tasked with developing Evonik’s business in Sub-Saharan Africa in the areas of Personal Care, Household Care and Baby Care. After appointing several distributors, and crisscrossing Africa, she gave up Baby Care in order to focus on opportunities in the Oil & Gas markets, while still handling business development for Personal & Household Care.

Kim MacCallum

Vice President & Chair of Social Committee

Kim is currently employed by Vantage Specialty Chemicals as the Sales Executive since 2013, she is Chair of the Coschem Social Committee, a previous Council Member and Chair of the Lecture Evening Committee and Lecturer for the Dip Cos Science. She completed Dip Cos Science in 2005 after a BSC Natural Health in 2004. She has been involved in the industry since 2001 having gained experience in many aspects from the lab to production to sales.

Mike Butt

Honorary Treasurer 

Moved to SA from the UK having worked from day 1 in the chemical industry with 40 years experience in the world of Silicones. After working in Germany and the USA has settled in SA and started the company Afrisil in 2008, representing several of the worlds leading Silicone producers here. Trained as a Chemist and qualified on the Coschem course.

Interests varied, including flying, off-road driving and just seeing as much of this wonderful country as possible.

Patricia has been active in the Cosmetic Industry since 1997. Drawing from her knowledge obtained from a B.Sc (Hons ) in Biochemistry and Coschem Cosmetic Science Diploma, she started her career as Cosmetic R&D Chemist at Annique Skin Care. She has since been involved in various local Cosmetic Manufacturing companies including PPM , Incolabs, Permark International and SDK Agencies. She obtained a broad knowledge across various market segment including Skin Care, Suncare, Hair Care and Colour Cosmetics. All of her past experience culminated in the position of Technical Manager at Sensient Colors South Africa, where she serves the cosmetic industry with information and expertise regarding all matters related to colour.

Professional experience reflects over 25 years of creative leadership,human capital and business development, and visionary capacities in the academia and private sector. Expertly navigated the complex petrochemical industry in various Managerial to Executive positions; Built expertise in Business strategy, Strategy and Organizational Development, Research and Development, Product and Applications Development, Business and Market development, Corporate Image (Brand Management), Corporate Communication, Corporate Social Responsibility and Relational Value enhancement (Stakeholder Relations management).Seasoned executive with added operational experience within non-profit organizations including social welfare,pyscho-social, socio-economic, environmental and educational organizations. Expansive entrepreneurial thinker with a flair for new business strategies and delivering innovative solutions. Board directorship experience of over 10 years in private sector, Non-governmental organizations,government agencies and academia. Currently Chairperson of the South African national agency for Small Enterprise Development within the ministry for Small Business & Cooperatives Development.



Amanda Profile

Amanda Dahl

Amanda comes from an industrial chemical background with 8 years of experience in detergency manufacturing. She has certification in GMP and HACCP. She completed the Coschem Diploma in 2015 with her husband Matthew. Amanda is the Managing Director of PHI Developments that sources speciality products and raw material for a vast variety of industries. She also distributes finished products for 4M solutions. She has two daughters, Aaliyah and Likita. In her leisure time enjoys cooking with them and reading books when she isn’t programming with her husband.

CdP 362 Charmaine Du Preez

Chair of Seminar Committee

Charmaine works for Chempure as a Key Accounts manager on Personal Care and Homecare. She is an R&D Chemist and a Packaging Engineer, with a Diploma in Cosmetic Science and a Diploma in Packaging Engineering. She has studied Beauty Technology at Technikon of Pretoria and Production management and is currently studying her Biomedical Science degree at Unisa. She has 18 years of experience in the industry and held various positions from Lab manager, Manufacturing Manager, Quality Manager, R&D Chemist, Product developer, HOD Manufacturing and Packaging Ingeneer to her current position being Key Accounts manager for Personal Care and Homecare, with various companies, such as Adcock Ingram/Tiger Brands, CW Pharmaceuticals, Avon/Justine, SRT/Southern Implants, Prime Products and Favours Factory. She continued her journey by starting her own consulting business with a salon and consulted for different companies. She then decided to pursue a sales career and is the Key accounts manager at Chempure.

I enjoy Photography and the outdoors.

I love Zumba, I am a qualified instructor and Bounce as sports.

I am married and have two daughters Mikayla and Abbygale Du Preez, being 7 years and 9 months of age.

An enthusiastic Chemist with a great deal of experience in project planning and executions, process control and optimization, proven expertise in wet and surface chemistry, Quality Management and Product Development

Holder of a BSc Hons in Chemistry and a Diploma in Cosmetic Science.Kicked off career in Mining experience spanning over 5yers as Reduction Officer, 9yrs of Detergent Manufacturing with Bliss Brands. Joined Coschem in 2018 as an Education Officer


  Lumbi Moyo 

Lumbi is currently Lead application Scientist at Croda SA. She received her PhD in Chemical Technology from the University of Pretoria, during which she was a visiting doctoral scholar at the Center of Engineering Sciences & Polymer Technology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. She also holds a diploma in Cosmetic Science from COSCHEM. Her previous work experience includes scientific research and development at the CSIR and agrochemicals field. An avid reader and innovation enthusiast.

Percy is the holder of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Applied Chemistry and the Diploma in Cosmetic Science. He has worked in various capacities within the cosmetic industry in South Africa including but not limited to Quality Management & Control, Product Development and Regulatory Affairs. Percy is a member of COSCHEM, serves on the society’s Education Committee and also lectures the Basic Chemistry, Oils, Fats & Waxes as well as the Hair Care Modules for the Diploma course. He currently serves or has served on several working groups and committees for the Chemical, Cosmetic, FMCG & Allied Industries at CTFA, SABS, NRCS, CGCSA, AMA and several other South African government departments and their agencies. The activity of these working groups and committees includes but is not limited to the regulatory aspects of nanotechnology, chemicals management, cosmetics advertising, cosmetic ingredients, cosmetic product categories, legal metrology, waste management, standards development etc. Involvement in this vast array of regulatory activities has culminated in Percy being appointed as the Chairperson of the Cosmetic Regulatory Review (CRR) Working Group at CTFA that helps keep the cosmetic industry’s formal and self-regulatory mechanisms up to date with worldwide regulatory norms. Currently, Percy works for L’Oréal South Africa in the position of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Advisor responsible for Regulatory Intelligence Activities in the Sub-Saharan Africa Region.

Jacques Strydom

Jacques obtained a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Stellenbosch in 2014. In 2016 he started his career in the cosmetic industry as R&D manager at a manufacturing company in Cape Town, formulating for retailers including Woolworths and PEP Stores. In this time, he also got involved with COSCHEM as the council member for the Cape Town chapter. He recently joined the consumer specialities team at ChemSystems as the Technical manager, looking after personal care and home care.



Samantha Pols

Samantha is currently the Manager of Research & Development at SkinChem (Pty) Ltd. – Manufacturing Laboratory. She obtained her BSc Microbiology degree from University of Pretoria, initially working in the medical microbiology laboratory at Ampath Pathology Laboratory Support Services. She then completed her Diploma in Cosmetic Science and has served on the Coschem Education Committee since. She has 6 years working experience in the cosmetic industry for various companies such as Accolade Laboratories and ScentPac in Cape Town, contract manufacturing various cosmetic skincare brands; in Johannesburg for Savannah Fine Chemicals, as a Product Specialist and SkinChem (Pty) Ltd., working predominantly in Product Development. She has a passion for cosmetics and is eager to continuously improve her knowledge in this field. She enjoys the outdoors, gym, yoga, reading and spending time with family & friends.

Wayne is the Managing and Technical Director of Vantage Specialty Chemicals & Cosmetic Technologies. He is a Biochemist and has a Diploma in Cosmetic Science and Directors Administration. Wayne has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry and specialises in Hair Care, particularly, ethnic hair, Skin Care and Suncare. He has held various positions from QC Material analyst, R&D Manager, Manufacturing Manager, Technical Manager to his current position, with various companies, such as Revlon, Amka, Hoechst and Procter & Gamble. He currently serves on the Coschem council, was past president, chairs the Scientific committee and lectures in Stability Science and Ethnic Hair. He is on the CTFA Executive committee and an Export Executive. He also serves on the Technology Innovation Agencies Advisory Panel.His hobbies include Wild life and hunting. As sport goes, he is a Golfer and Boater.

Started my career in Finance with a Diploma in Financial Accounting/Bookkeeping and held various positions with a variety of Industries like FMCG, News Media, Health & Wellness and Motor Industries.

I made the Big change in following my passion and completed the Coschem Diploma course in 2009 My passion has taken me on a journey of devoting my free time in developing and mixing of ingredients to create products of which some found homes with Brand owners and Entrepreneurs.

To try stay on top of the ever changing Cosmetic legislation law, I love reading/studying actual Science/Cosmetic books and do research via all media on Ingredients, Packaging, and Labelling etc….. My passion has never changed to have my own Label and to be the Best I possibly can.

I am currently with Unichem Services as the only Sales Manager on the Cosmetic/Coating side and get involved with all aspects of Technical and R&D work on Cosmetics.
